Managing with Data is a ½-day seminar designed for managers – the users of data. The seminar is presented from the manager’s point of view and considers operational and strategic applications. Special considerations are given to workplace variation as it applies to managerial decision-making, options for change, and setting and managing to meaningful targets and goals. Finally, the seminar examines how managers can enhance decision-making by becoming better users and communicators of numerical data.

What are the seminar objectives?

The main objective of the seminar is to help managers become better users and communicators of numerical data. Additional objectives include:

  • Distinguish between random variation and change.
  • Identify and use meaninginful data needed to enhance decision making.
  • Understanding key questions for analyzing data, interpret findings, and communicate results.
  • Enhance ability to read and interpret data, and the ability to explain such concepts to others.

How are the objectives achieved?

During the seminar, participants are engaged in hands-on activities which involve: (1) the principles of variation as they apply to managerial decision-making, (2) interpreting findings, and (3) applying what was learned. A key benefit of the seminar is that participants have an opportunity to examine their agency’s data, discuss findings, and propose actions.
